This year at GITEX, Etisalat also had a special showcase on the future of mobility, which is the best use case for 5G. It combines the flexibility of a small two-seater ground vehicle with the freedom and speed of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air vehicle, thus bridging the automotive and aerospace domains. This was developed by ItalDesign, a first fully electric and zero-emission modular system designed to help resolve traffic congestion in large urban areas. The passenger cabin attached to either a car module (provided by Audi) or a flight module (manufactured by Airbus), can cruise autonomously on the road and lift into the air vertically. Both modules are entirely electric ad autonomous.

Designed to demonstrate a less conventional method of transport for the future, the ‘Oasis’ has a huge glass windscreen area, fitted with augmented reality technology that lets the driver virtually ‘place’ displays and objects on the screen. The car has a solar panel on the roof, while the interior offers a new living space complete with armchairs, a sideboard, TV, and a multi-functional steering wheel, emphasising the car's main role as an autonomous vehicle.

The ultra-light, two-seater passenger cabin, which can be attached to either a car module (provided by Audi) or a flight module (manufactured by Airbus), can cruise autonomously on the road and lift into the air vertically. Both modules are entirely electric ad autonomous. The interior of the cabin boasts of a TV-like 49-inch screen that relays information back to the passengers. Interaction between humans and the machine is performed by speech and face recognition, while additional control can be achieved via eye-tracking technology and touching the screen.

Applications are open to companies across the globe to address any of these challenges along with technology experts from Etisalat Digital. Companies will be shortlisted and selected as part of a nine-week DFA program expected to start in September.

Towards the end of the program, Etisalat Digital will sign a commercial agreement with selected companies who will then be on boarded in the Etisalat Scale-Ups Program where they will receive access to Etisalat Digital resources and experts, office space, and support needed to deliver joint projects.

Through their partnership with Etisalat Digital, they will develop Virtual Reality tours of major attractions in the UAE.

The second challenge sought to accelerate Etisalat’s transformation to a digital telco by increasing customer adoption of digital self-care channels thereby enhancing customer experience and reducing 50% calls to Etisalat customer care over the next one year using artificial intelligence, analytics and insights, and machine learning.

KocharTech, a company that builds solutions to help connected consumers drive full potential of a digital life with the use of latest technologies like Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, was selected for this challenge. It is offering an integrated solution to Etisalat with multiple technology stacks using Artificial Intelligence, SIM, Robotic process automation and Digital Enablement solutions for their subscribers.

The companies were shortlisted based on their capability to build and launch their core technology and ability to demonstrate traction and/or substantial use cases. Over the nine-week program, Etisalat Digital engaged with the shortlisted companies – from ideation to prototyping and testing new innovative solutions.

Towards the end of the program, Etisalat Digital signed MoUs with selected companies who will then be on boarded in the Etisalat Scale-Ups Program where they will receive access to Etisalat Digital resources and experts, office space, and support needed to deliver joint projects.

The foundation of this commercial launch was laid in December last year, where Etisalat was one of the operators globally to launch a pre-commercial 5G network in certain areas of the country demonstrating high-speed use cases in addition to the low latency feature of the 5G technology. Etisalat also demonstrated an advanced 5G based drone equipped with a 360-degree VR camera and 4K streaming experience.

In the first phase of the launch, 5G fixed wireless services (fixed and internet services) will be provided in selected locations in UAE, which will gradually expand to other parts of the country depending on consumer demand and requirements.
